Meet Jay Wu Jun Yow >> Tech Manager | Assistant Engineer
What is your typical “day in the life?”
My typical "day in the life?" hmm.. pretty much revolves around "Headphones" "Playlist" and "Music". Also trackball! Trackball is very very important to me, it's part of my life now!
What separates SweetSounds from other studios in the city?
I would say SweetSounds is cozy, viby, and chill. What do you have to say when your studio manager get called "Serial Chiller" Before. That pretty much explains it.
How do you approach a new project?
First, I will say hi to the client! That's very important! After that of course listen to the whole project or at least get the vision from the client or the artist. Then slowly guide them through the journey, it's like you are the Drive in the Cab, and the artist is the passenger.
What are some of your favorite recent projects? Why are they special?
All my projects is my favorite. They are like my babies (Even thought I am still single, lol). But a few projects, that I really really loved, is the one mix that I did for my friend back in Malaysia, cause he let me experiments on a lots of things. And basically my mix got approved on the first try!! And the others are Dear June, a Full Band sessions and Yvens's session where I am the Pro Tools operators and half-engineer I guess. :D I love when musician gets together and throw idea around!
What are your “go-to” plug-ins?
This is my Favorite part. My "go-to" Plug-ins. Surprising enough, it's the Avid Channel Strips! It's got everything I need on it. And then Maag EQ4, my favorite EQ, CL1B, my favorite compressor, and Soundtoys! My favorite toys, no pun intended.
Any advice for new clients coming into the studio for the first time?
I would say get comfortable and practice. And prepare everything. It's always good to over-prepared. Pre-production is very important. Always communicate with your engineer.
Anything we can look forward to hearing from you in 2016?
In 2016, maybe. I am mixing some pretty cool stuff, and hopefully it get be able to see the daylight before 2016 ends!
